In order to better support our growing community we've set up a new more powerful forum. Hi dishwater63, Installing WHSv1-OEM on your server is possible but its abit different and you can perform a recovery but its not clearly indicated as Factory Recovery or Server Recovery as with the HP Software and its been quite sometime since I have performed a Recovery I just don't recall the exact verbage.
If your contemplating installing WHS its an altogether different OS and some have installed it and I would urge you to review what others have posted so you will know what issues if any your will run into. Now its recommended you have all the drivers handy before you begin that way you can load what WHS doesn't have but needs. Any drivers which affect the storage controller will be necessary because WHS will need to see your storage pool drives for the recovery to take place properly otherwise it will just treat the installation as a new install and nothing good comes of that unless you want a fresh start.
Now if you do not have use for the HP Software or the overhead it places on your server then maybe this will be a good thing for you but you may have some difficulty in getting the LED's functional which is controlled by the HPMediaSmartService so you may want to look into that if you like the LED's functional. The other thing which I am not sure of interms of the control is the fan speeds. I believe you have an EX49x and I believe but am not sure of that those are controlled in the BIOS so if I am correct you may have nothing to worry about but here again I would urge you to look into it because keeping things properly cooled is important since your server is a Passive Cooled System.
What I can tell you is that what ever HP included with their server you can find alternate software to replace it in terms of media streaming functions and there are a ton of them.
So what ever you chose to do just make certain you fully understand the task at hand and what will be required of you to have a successful install. Learn from those who have gone before you. Who knows maybe you will find it to be better or possibly something that requires a big bottle of Advil which is something I always have on hand.
Good Luck and regardless of what path you chose please come back and share your experiences and if you need help then ask. I have not been as active as I generally have been these past few months but I will make an effort to check on any progress you write about.
Posted: Sun Jun 10, pm. I'm sorry, I have to jump in here. Did you replace the old hdd or did you leave in place? Should be replaced. Ran a few times in not being able to read some files from DVD.
A little later: ooops Now it tells me after a lot of copying: "Copying files failed"The device is not connected error code Oxf. Did fresh install with just the one new disk.
Hooked up two disks containing all the data again , and starting a "Server Reinstallation" again. Am doing a regular install now, and then adding the disks later not attach in WHS as you warned ,. Good luck. If these odd things start happening again, I'd test with some different memory or pare down to just one and rotate until you are stable.
Sounds like you may have a bad stick in the bunch Your timings may be cranked up too high in BIOS, or a bad stick or what's really fun to diagnose is when it's both. When you went into BIOS, did you restore defaults?
Or otherwise load different settings? If so, this might have reset your timings to somthing less aggressive, and now you are good to go. Wow, I had no idea this was so hard. Entirely unacceptable in my opinion. If you lose the boot disk you should be able to pop in the WHS disk, it should see the existing data and offer to reinstall while retaining existing data.
Data corruption strike one , poor write performance strike 2 , and horrible restore process when a boot disk is lost.
Oh, and no bit connector. Another minor annoyance. Fortunately it otherwise works pretty well. I tell you what would be perfect - I wish they would just release a fixed, working, well performing DE migrator you could install on other MS OS's.
Really thats the thing I like most about the whole OS is the ability to plug in disks and have it show up as a monster volume. I agree entirely. I have 2 x GB shiny new disks for data storage. Will reinstalling preserve the data on the other drives?
Much of the data on the system only exists on the drives in the server. Am I misunderstanding or are you saying the following: First, if my WHS system drive fails or even my motherboard fails, I can run the reinstall process and still maintain all my shares and the data which was stored on them? In other words, it won't reformat those drives when I add them back to the pool? Secondly, if the reinstall option does not show up, I can do a regular install with the pooled drives disconnected, then reconnect the pooled drives with the data still on them , run the reinstall process, and I should have lost no shares and no data?
And, again, it won't reformat those drives when I add them back to the pool? Problem: Boot disk replaced, can't find my data. I've read these posts over and over again thinking I got it all, but it seems I have to beg for help after all They're detected and reported as healthy, but that's it. Thanks in advance Lasse. Thank you for replying. I did find the procedure in this thread, but I might have misunderstood it JonTheTechs posting on 30th of January The new system disk had no partitions on it, it came fresh out of the box and I formatted it during WHS installation.
I've got a third 1TB disk which I want to use as system disk instead. What is THE procedure to get this done without loosing my data, or without having to copy them to a temporary location first? When I did server reinstall the first time I was never asked to import or rebuild my old data, something I thought would happen. This is more detailed outlined in this FAQ. I am getting the server reinstall option, but it won't integrate my data. I've added drivers for my SATA card during install, but I'm still left with the system disk and two seemingly empty data disks.
Did you give it enough time at a period it may have seemed to hang? It seems that the reason for my "non-integration-of-data" is the SATA drivers. I got the disks up and running ok, but they seemed empty.
Second or third or fourth : time around, I also tried adding the drivers during the DOS-part of the install. It failed loading them, and in the completion phase WHS failed to install at all. Copy my data to temporary secure locations, perform a WHS clean install, load the drivers from within an up-and-running-WHS, and then copy the data back.
Hey guys, I've tried on and off for a couple of weeks now, trying to get my WHS back in good shape. I'm installing WHS, adding drivers via good old floppies during installation, but WHS install never ask me to integrate my old drives during re-installation.
I'm thinking that the fact that I have to add drivers during re-installation, is somehow preventing WHS re-install from wanting to import my old data. Once WHS is installed, I can see and access my drives, they're just not added to the storage pool.
I can't seem to find a solution to this, Any hints? It never does ask. It's automatic. Just to confirm: when you get to the installation selection option screen, you see 2 options: New Installation and Server Reinstallation, and you are selecting Server Reinstallation, is that correct?
Also, do you see all of the drives on the screen before Load Additional Drivers Screen? What is the file structure on those drives in other words, what folders and files do you see there? Yesterday I found my WHS system disk had failed.
I read through this thread and began my repair. I couldn't be happier with the way things went in my case. Here is what I did: 1. Replaced the failed IDE drive with a different size and manufacturer drive. Booted from the WHS installation disk. Selected the "Reinstall" option. The reinstall went smoothly, except when I then booted up it would hang near the end of the startup. Went through the reinstall again, booted fine this time.
Reinstalled drivers.
